کتاب «سفرهای سندباد» بخشی از قصه‌های کتاب هزار و یک شب است. سندباد به معنای نیروی اندیشه و همچنین به معنای بادی است که از سوی رود سند، در هند می‌وزد. جدای از این معنا و ترجمه‌های کلمه‌ای، سندباد بیشتر یک ابرقهرمان و یک شخصیت داستانی کهن ایرانی است که از او به عنوان سندباد بحری (سندباد دریایی) نام برده شده است.  مطالب بسیاری پیرامون دقایق و ظرایف حکایت‌های سفرهای سندباد ذکر شده و می‌شود؛ اما نکته‌ی مهم کتاب حاضر، شیوایی و رسایی بیان این کتاب برای کودکان است که  «زینب علیزاده اوشابی» به‌خوبی آن‌را برای کودکان و نوجوانان بازنویسی کرده است.

One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights, from the first English-language edition (c. 1706 – c. 1721), which rendered the title as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment.The work was collected over many centuries by various authors, translators, and scholars across West, Central, and South Asia and North Africa. Some tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Greek, Indian, Jewish and Turkish folklore. In particular, from the Pahlavi Persian work Hezār Afsān (Persian: هزار افسان‎, lit. A Thousand Tales), which in turn relied partly on Indian elements.
